Kirchheimbolanden – Medieval towers and a powerful family
Would you like to stroll through a medieval city? Well, here is your chance. Just visit Kirchheimbolanden! The city owes the second part of its (incredibly long) name to one family: the house of Bolanden.
They started out as unfree nobles serving the emperor Frederick I. Barbarossa (find out more about him at Kaiserslautern & Maaraue Mainz). Gradually the lords of Bolanden extended their power in the region. Similar to Markward von Annweiler on Trifels Castle they were the social climbers of the Middle Ages.
Numerous medieval buildings
Like Gelnhausen, Kirchheimbolanden offers a glimpse into another era. Thanks to numerous preserved medieval buildings. First of all, the city wall is impressive with its height of 8 meters. You can climb onto its parapet walk at the grey tower. The wall was once built to protect the city. Today it serves as a pleasant viewing platform. And although the city hall tower hides beneath a baroque roof, it was originally built in the Middle Ages.
