Kings were elected and crowned in Mainz. But some huge events hardly left any traces, like the Diet of Penetecost in 1184 at the Maaraue.

SchUM

Like Speyer and Worms, Mainz is part of the SchUM-cities. It was a hub for jewish life and culture in the Middle Ages. Many living jewish traditions originated here. Discover this part of Mainz’ history at the Jewish Cemetery Mainz (Judensand) and the New Synagoge.
