Speyer Cathedral – A powerful structure
Conrad II. did not live to see its completion. But the cathedral became a centre for the Salian dynasty.
It was in Speyer Cathedral where many powerful people of the Middle Ages met. Their decisions had consquences for the whole realm. On Christmas in 1146 an assembly of princes and bishops took place here. Conrad III. had invited them. Bernhard of Clairvaux took his chance. He was a monk of the Cistercian order (see more in Eberbach Abbey). And he wanted to convince the king to start another Crusade. He was succesful and Conrad II. promised to act. Wether he did this because he was moved by Bernhard’s passionate speech or because he wanted to retain his power within the realm, can not be finally resolved.
